I had this question come in today, and it is one that I hear often, so I thought I would answer it for everyone today.
Question: “When I go to the EPIC Print Studio website to order I can choose Offset or Digital printing. Which one should I choose?”
Great question. First, some products are only offered digitally (like Plastic Cards) and some only offered offset (like Door Hangers), so sometimes what product you are looking for will determine whether you have it printed offset or digital.
There is quite a bit of science to digital vs. offset printing, that I won’t go into, but if you want to learn more I will put some links at the bottom of this article for you to check out.
When to choose Offset
4-Color Offset printing is ideal for lower prices on large quantity orders or any time you would like coating on your products. Almost always, people choose this option when ordering large quantities. Products can be coated and ink saturates the paper so folded products won’t crack like they will with digital printed products.
When to choose Digital
4-Color Digital printing is ideal for lower quantity orders and additional paper options, and usually has even faster turnaround times. Digital products cannot be coated.
If you only need 25 flyers digital is going to be the way to go.
If you are around 500 of any product, if offered it will always be less expensive to go offset.
If you are going to fold your product, or have it handled often (such as in the mail) I would suggest offset printing.
These are the simple answers and each job should be reviewed on a case by case basis, especially when color and specialty paper is involved. Give us a call and we would be happy to look into your project further and give our profession guidance.
